In the meantime...

While the Greece case has been progressing through the court system, Americans United's Legal team has been hard at work on a number of other matters as well; consider the following:
  • Number of warning letters AU has sent to other violators since the original Greece case was filed: 500
  • Number of other lawsuits AU has filed since initiating the Greece case: 15
  • Number of friend-of-the-court briefs written by Americans United for other cases while litigating Greece: 58

Americans United will argue a case before the US Supreme Court on November 6.

Town of Greece v. Galloway is about the right of citizens to participate in local government without being required to participate in sectarian prayers. It raises fundamental constitutional questions about the limits of government-sponsored prayers - the first legislative prayer case before the Supreme Court in 30 years!

AU launched a lawsuit on behalf of residents Susan Galloway and Linda Stephens when the Greece (NY) Town Board refused to hear their complaints about pervasively sectarian prayers offered at the beginning of town meetings. A US District Court ruled on behalf of the town, so AU appealed. The 2nd US Circuit Court of Appeals then ruled in our favor, but the Religious Right legal group Alliance Defending Freedom took the case to the US Supreme Court on behalf of the town.
